Why Rough, Bumpy Skin Keeps Coming Back — And What Actually Helps
Scrubs. Body brushes. Rich lotions. If you deal with small rough bumps on your arms, thighs, or elsewhere on your body, chances are you've tried most of the usual advice — and watched the texture come back within days. Here's why that happens, and what actually changes it.
WHAT'S ACTUALLY CAUSING THE BUMPS
The rough, gooseflesh-like texture most people deal with is keratosis pilaris (KP) — a very common, completely harmless build-up of dead skin cells around hair follicles. It's not dirt, it's not an infection, and it's not caused by anything you're doing wrong. It's also extremely common: most people carry some degree of it somewhere on their body.
What trips people up is that KP looks like something a scrub should fix — so that's what most people reach for first.
A scrub only works on skin for the seconds it's physically in contact with your hand. A rich lotion is mostly absorbed into the surrounding skin before it reaches the buildup around the follicle. Neither stays in place long enough to actually work on what's causing the texture.
WHY REMOVAL METHODS ONLY GO SO FAR
Why body scrubs plateau: A physical scrub works mechanically on the surface. It can smooth what's already loose, but it can't reach the buildup forming just under the surface around each follicle — so within days, the texture is back.
Why rich lotions mostly sit on top: Occlusive body creams are built to seal in moisture, which is the opposite of what's needed to loosen built-up dead skin. They can make the area feel softer temporarily without changing the underlying texture.
Why in-clinic exfoliation (peels, dermaplaning) works but is hard to keep up with: Professional exfoliation treatments go deeper than anything at home, but at real cost per session, they're not something most people can do often enough to keep pace with an area that's constantly regenerating.
The common thread: most routines treat the surface once, then stop. KP responds to consistent, sustained contact — which is the gap a leave-on product is built to close.
CONTACT TIME IS THE PART MOST PRODUCTS SKIP
Contact time is simply how long an active ingredient stays against the skin it's meant to work on. A scrub rinsed off after thirty seconds has had almost no contact time. A lotion absorbed within a minute isn't far behind.
Glycolic acid is a well-established alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that loosens the bonds holding built-up dead skin cells together so they shed more easily. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can travel into and around the hair follicle rather than sitting on top of the skin. Both are well-studied ingredients — the limiting factor is usually format, not chemistry.
That's the reasoning behind our Smooth & Even Glycolic Body Stick: a leave-on, solid stick with 7% glycolic acid and 0.5% salicylic acid, balanced with 10% shea butter so the skin barrier isn't compromised while the acids work.
WHAT CUSTOMERS TELL US
Common, recurring feedback themes from customers — not individually attributed quotes.
WHAT TO REALISTICALLY EXPECT
In a 4-week consumer study of 100 participants using the stick as directed, users reported visibly improved dry, rough, and flaky skin after the first use, and a visible reduction in ingrown hairs and body breakouts within 7 days. A separate 4-week clinical study of 21 participants found visible improvement in keratosis pilaris texture within 7 days.
Like most exfoliation routines, results build with consistency rather than overnight. Most people start with 2–3 applications a week and increase from there as their skin adjusts.
HOW TO USE IT
- Apply directly to clean, dry skin, AM or PM — no rinsing needed.
- Start with 2–3 times a week, building up to daily as tolerated.
- Follow with a body moisturiser, and use SPF on treated areas if they'll be in the sun.
- Patch test first, and avoid broken, irritated, or sunburnt skin.
